Korean Makgeolli - Korea’s Classic Rice Wine

韓國馬格利

Makgeolli, also known as Korean rice wine or Korean rice beer, is a traditional alcoholic beverage made from fermented rice, water, and barley. Often compared to  soju , another iconic Korean drink, makgeolli offers a lighter, creamier alternative with a unique, slightly sweet yet tangy flavour profile. The drink typically has an alcohol content ranging between 6% to 8%, making it smooth and refreshing for casual drinking.

Makgeolli is enjoyed during celebrations, festivals, or alongside a traditional  Korean meal. It pairs perfectly with  kimchi , pajeon (Korean pancakes), grilled meats, and other savoury dishes. Like soju, it is often served as part of social occasions, adding to the communal drinking culture of Korea.

Makgeolli has a cloudy appearance and a smooth texture that sets it apart from clearer spirits like soju. The flavour ranges from sweet to mildly tangy, with hints of rice and fermentation. Today, modern versions also come in unique flavours, such as strawberry, mango, or green tea, offering a contemporary twist on this traditional drink.
